Results of Research and Development of the Ministry of Health, Agency for Drugs and Food, and the Bogor Agricultural University 47 brands of infant formula to ensure that circulated in Indonesia during 2011 is safe from bacterial contamination by Enterobacter sakazakii.

The results of 47 samples of milk over infant formula production in 2011 was announced today at the office of the Ministry of Communication and Informatics in Jakarta (07/08/2011). "All formulas circulating E sakazakii bacteria are not found," said Head of R & D Kemenkes Trihono.

Trihono revealed, the study conducted by the method of surveillance or search to find whether there are bacteria that are found or not at all infant formula in circulation.

"Every brand is taken two batches or two different registration numbers. Examples of formula milk drawn from the seven regions in 33 provinces, both circulating in traditional markets and supermarkets," he said.

All samples taken from BPOM officers were then cross-examined by the three institutions namely IPB, BPOM, and R & D Kemenkes using a number of research methods and examined in different laboratories.

The results of this research announcement is expected to provide assurance of food safety for the community. Sampling region is divided into seven regions throughout Indonesia, including Sumatra, Java, Bali, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara, Maluku and North Maluku, and Papua. 
Stages of the survey, said Trihono, conducted in March-July 2011.

On the same occasion, Minister of Health Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih again reminded that infants be breastfed 0-6 months old. "Formulas are given only in certain circumstances, for example if the mother is not possible to give milk," he said.

Endang Rahayu said, there are some things that need attention of parents in providing formula milk to babies, such as note the expiration date, notice the integrity of packaging, pay attention to hygiene, cleanliness keep bottles and teats of milk, dilute milk with water to a boil, milk should be spent (before 2 hours), and packaging that have been opened must be spent within eight days.

Previously, the results of IPB on 22 samples and 15 samples of infant formula baby food production from 2003 to 2006 shows, at 22.73 percent and 40 percent of infant formula baby food samples contaminated with the bacteria E sakazakii positive.
